Though Mantle's career is full of incredible moments and stretches of play, his 1961 season ranks amongst his finest in the majors and one of the most memorable for fans of the game lucky enough to watch him sparkle on the diamond. That year, Mantle and teammate Roger Maris put on a show trying to chase down Babe Ruth's single-season record of 60 home runs. Maris, of course, triumphed, socking his 61st round-tripper on the season's final day. Mantle, hampered by injury down the stretch, ended his season with a career-high 54 homers en route to a second-place MVP finish. Those titanic performances helped New York win 109 games before capturing the World Series.
This 1961 Topps Mickey Mantle #300 transports collectors back to a year in which Mantle showcased why he's one of the most beloved baseball players of all time. Only two examples of the 10,700-plus assessed by PSA have earned a higher grade than this one's PSA 9.
