That year, Mantle and teammate Roger Maris put on a show trying to chase down Babe Ruth's single-season record of 60 home runs. Maris, of course, triumphed, socking his 61st round-tripper on the season's final day. Mantle, hampered by injury down the stretch, ended his season with a career-high 54 homers en route to a second-place MVP finish. Those titanic performances helped New York win 109 games before capturing the World Series.
