As far as iconic baseball card sets go, 1993 Topps Finest ranks among the most groundbreaking. Finest introduced chromium sports cards for the first time. These helped pull the industry out of an era where cheap stock and massive overproduction were still prevalent. But Topps produced only 4,000 cases of Finest, which provided the scarcity necessary to keep card prices afloat.
But the most revolutionary inclusion in Topps’ newest product was one most collectors have taken for granted in the ultra-modern age, Refractors. These rainbow-finish parallels offered scarcity never before seen in sports cards. Falling roughly one per hobby box, each Refractor had an estimated print run of 241. Ranking high on the list is Nolan Ryan. The flamethrowing Hall of Famer, who played his final season in 1993, was part of the Baseball's Finest All-Stars subset, reserved for the marquee players on the 199-card checklist.
