Parenthood has a way of changing individuals from all walks of life—including the most famous athletes in the world. “Sometimes in the past, when I played, something might make me lose focus, or I would go home after a game where I thought I could have played better, and I would let it hang over my head for a long time when it shouldn’t,” LeBron James said in December 2005, reflecting on balancing his first 14 months of fatherhood with international superstardom. “But now, being a parent, I go home and see my son, and I forget about any mistake I ever made or the reason I’m upset. ... It has just made me grow as an individual and as a man.” Nealy two decades later, LeBron’s influence can be seen in his oldest son, 19-year-old Bronny, who has grown into an adult with his own NBA aspirations. In recognition of the lineage that could make LeBron and Bronny the first father-son duo to play as NBA teammates, Topps produced an unforgettable basketball card celebrating the father and son’s basketball roots—the 2023-24 Bowman University Chrome Footsteps 1/1 Superfractor Dual Autograph. Topps revealed the LeBron/Bronny Footsteps Superfractor at the end of the “Origin of Greatness” video promoting the Bowman brand on January 10. Soon after, the first non-Upper Deck, pack-pulled LeBron autograph card ever produced was packed away into a hobby box scheduled for release on January 19—making it the ultimate chase card from the 2023-24 Bowman Chrome U product. Created by Topps senior creative director Jeff Zachowski, the card had pack odds of 1:573,456, and Zachowski said it was designed to “not only reflect a player’s athletic prowess but also resonate with fans and collectors.” In an Instagram post on release day, LeBron gave an ode to the card’s scarcity, wishing collectors “happy card hunting” in the caption of a photo of the hard-signed Superfractor that generated nearly 250,000 likes. In early February, a collector visiting Jim and Steve’s Sports Cards in Waukegan, Illinois, a suburb north of Chicago, beat the odds by pulling the hobby-exclusive card, which later earned a PSA 10 designation. The card provides a side-by-side snapshot of father and son at the amateur level. On the left, LeBron moves the ball during a high school game with the Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish, while the right side features Bronny pushing the ball up the court with the University of Southern California Trojans. On the back, Topps pays homage to the family legacy, suggesting LeBron will pass down the blueprints for the kingdom to Bronny. This card was only made possible after Fanatics—the parent company of Topps and PWCC—reached a multi-year, trading card and autograph agreement with LeBron, who had been an Upper Deck-exclusive signer since May 21, 2003. Collectors immediately got a look at the power of the Fanatics deal, as the company unveiled the one-of-a-kind Footsteps Superfractor shortly after announcing LeBron’s signing. With Bronny already signed to an NIL deal, pairing him on a card with LeBron seemed like a logical next step in the evolution of the second-generation James’ trading card profile. Since Bronny’s birth on October 6, 2004, there has been a fascination with the athletic potential of LeBron’s children. The next day, one newspaper reported in jest that the Orlando Magic had already signed Bronny to a five-year contract. Another wrote: “Word is the baby LeBron, born at 7 pounds, 15 ounces, already has the hands and feet of a future basketball player (Yes, really).” Growing up around the NBA gave Bronny an edge, but he also quickly developed above-average fundamentals and a national following. As a 10-year-old, Bronny went viral after LeBron shared a highlight video from a youth tournament online. “He’s got a chance,” LeBron said of Bronny’s star potential at the time. “He loves the game, and he works at it. He has a chance to be good, but he is still young and just playing for the love of the game.” A few months later, Bronny began receiving collegiate scholarship offers, but he would not take any of them seriously until he became a legitimate prospect as a high school standout. On May 10, 2023, Bronny signed a letter of intent to play for USC. He became the fifth five-star recruit and sixth McDonald’s All-American to join that program since Andy Enfield became coach in 2019. Bronny has not yet disclosed when he plans on entering the NBA draft. Throughout NBA history, more than 100 father-son duos have appeared in at least one official game, though no father and son have ever played against each other in the same season—let alone suited up as teammates. Even if Bronny does not declare for the 2024 NBA Draft, the possibility exists that he and his father could still play together, given LeBron’s remarkable longevity. At 39 years old and in his 21st season, LeBron continues to average around 25 points per game, using his superb scoring skills to become the first player in history to eclipse the 40,000-point plateau. He will likely smash the single-season scoring record for a player age 39 or older (Karl Malone’s 20.6 ppg. mark from 2002-03), which will complement his records for age 37 (30.3 ppg.) and age 38 (28.9 ppg.). Kareem Abdul-Jabbar—who LeBron passed as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer in the 2022-23 season—holds the high-water marks for scoring by a 40-year-old (14.6 ppg.) and a 41-year-old (10.1 ppg.). Barring a sudden decline, LeBron could stretch his career and pursue both marks, especially with the motivation of playing alongside his son driving him—a dream LeBron publicly disclosed two years ago and is exemplified by this 1/1 Superfractor Auto. The certification number on this card has been checked against the third-party grader's online database and is active as of 2/26/2024.
