Bobby Orr came into the NHL as the most ballyhooed rookie to hit the league in over a decade, and he did not care for the extra attention. “I can do without it,” Orr said. “I guess there will be a lot of sleepless nights for me if I don’t live up. I’m going to try my hardest, but all I can do is my best.” Fortunately for Orr, his best smashed expectations. Orr rose to prominence as one of the top defensemen of all time throughout his 12-year career. He won a record eight straight Norris Trophies from 1968 to ’75, but he also heavily contributed to Boston’s offensive game plan by leading the league in assists during five of those seasons. No moment, however, better defines Orr’s career than his joyous leap following his series-winning overtime goal in Game 4 of the 1970 Stanley Cup Finals against the St. Louis Blues. “I didn’t know where (the puck) was going,” Orr said. “I just shot the darn thing. I think it went between his legs. … I have to be the luckiest guy in the world.” One collector may express similar sentiments after winning this example of Orr’s iconic 1966 Topps rookie card. Featuring a television design, Orr’s rookie stands as one of the most recognizable vintage hockey cards ever produced, and the PSA 7 example in this month’s Premier Auction will likely leave collectors ballyhooing and leaping for joy at the prospect of owning an iconic piece of hockey history. The certification number on this card has been checked against the third-party grader's online database and is active as of 04/30/2025.
