Frank Thomas is one of the most dangerous hitters in baseball history. He was also one of the most beloved players among collectors in an era when baseball cards were booming. Although he has a handful of rookie cards in 1990 products, few hold significant value due to their massive print runs. The 1990 Topps No Name on Front Frank Thomas is a major exception. It's one of the most famous baseball card variations of all-time and one that is still shrouded in some mystery.
At a glance, the NNOF looks just the regular Big Hurt rookie from the flagship set. A young Thomas, decked out in his Auburn uniform, is pictured tagging out a runner. It's far from action packed but it carries the combination of a classic player and a classic brand. But there's a big mistake on this scarce error. Thomas' name is missing. Exactly how it happened and how many of the variations exist has never been confirmed. The printing defect left his name and part of the outline on the bottom portion of the card off. Had it been just about any other player in the set, it may not have been that big of a deal. But being the top rookie in the set, it created a frenzy.
Decades later, the 1990 Topps No Name on Front Frank Thomas remains one of the most legendary and coveted sports cards not just of the 1990s, but all-time.
PSA has graded the standard 1990 Topps Frank Thomas rookie card more than 25,000 times. A testament to the NNOF's rarity, less than 300 of the errors have been inspected. Of those, just 20 have a higher grade than this NM-MT PSA 8.
The certification number on this card has been checked against the third-party grader's online database and is active as of 01/28/2026.
