Released exclusively in English-speaking countries in 2002, the Legendary Collection paid homage to the original 151 Pokemon. This set is beloved by collectors for many reasons. This was the first Pokémon set to include box toppers. Collectors could get one of four different jumbo cards that were placed on top of the packs randomly. Charizard, Blastoise, Raichu, and Mewtwo were the possible toppers. These were four of the most popular artworks from the set so fans were just as excited about collecting these as they were the regular cards in the product. While the others are popular, no box topper was more sought after than Charizard.
Because these were the first Pokémon box topper cards, many collectors were not prepared to properly protect them. Many people did not have penny sleeves, toploaders or other supplies that would properly fit them. As a result, it is extremely rare to find any of the box toppers in top grade today. This is one of just 32 copies to achieve Gem Mint PSA 10 status.
The art used on the cards in the Legendary Collection were some of the most iconic from the previous years' sets and promo cards like the Base Set, Fossil, Jungle, and Team Rocket. Legendary Collection also debuted an entirely new holograph pattern known as the Firework Holo pattern that looks similar to exploding fireworks. This combination of popular art and the exciting new Firework Holo pattern helped make this set an immediate hit with collectors and its other elements like the box toppers followed.
