2019 Panini Absolute Kaboom! marked the hugely popular insert's debut in a football release. A handful of NFL stars were included in the multi-sport 2018 Kaboom! set put out as a standalone release through the Panini Rewards program, but this was the first time it was an insert set in a strictly football release. While the base versions were tough pulls, helping fuel their popularity, each card came with a pair of parallels, /10 Gold and 1/1 Green. Joe Montana is one of the top legends on the 50-card checklist. A four-time Super Bowl winner and three-time MVP, he's on the Mt. Rushmore of NFL quarterbacks. His popularity made him a pop culture icon and household name at a time that sports cards were undergoing tremendous growth. As a result, his cards remain extremely popular today. Although Kaboom! made its football debut in 2019, the inserts were already well established by this point. In 2013, Panini Creative Director Brandon Lesley contacted Hungarian illustrator Gyula Nemeth to draw the NBA players selected for a 20-card insert for Panini’s Innovation Basketball set. Nemeth responded by creating one of the most unforgettable card series in industry history, the stunning pop art collection known as Kaboom cards. Nemeth portrayed the players as comic book characters. A combination of scarcity, unique typography, original illustrations, and high-flying dunking poses featured on each card in the series made it an instant classic. The details in Nemeth’s illustrations add significant appeal from the facial features and color schemes to the chiseled muscles. Looking more broadly at the set, this is one of just four Green parallels from the entire checklist to get a Gem Mint 10 grade from PSA.
