As an 18-year-old, LeBron James took the sports world by storm as the top overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. Donning an all-white suit, LeBron walked across the stage at The Theater at Madison Square Garden with the world’s attention focused upon him and expectations that would make most teenagers crumble. Later in the evening, LeBron had his official draft portraits taken, and one of those photos graces the front of his flagship 2003-04 Topps rookie card.
Topps had introduced a serial-numbered Gold parallel to its baseball sets in 2001, but the concept did reach the basketball card market until 2003—and it could not have arrived at a better time. While print runs for baseball's Gold parallels matched the year they were released, basketball took things much smaller. With LeBron and the rest of a touted draft class highlighting the set, collectors went crazy for the product—hoping to uncover a hobby-exclusive Gold card, despite steep odds of 1:91 packs (1:2.5 boxes). With just 99 copies, that's 1,904 less than the comparable Gold parallels in 2003 Topps Baseball.
This Mint 9 is a pop 5 in the BGS registry with just three copies ranking higher.
