From the same renowned set that produced Mickey Mantle’s rookie card, 1951 Bowman Baseball was beloved out of the gate and continues to draw admiration from collectors across a wide spectrum. Known for its attractive lithograph, vibrant colors, challenging centering, and engaging flip-side story that transports fans back in time, this Willie Mays rookie card is one of the greatest of all-time.
If not for bubble gum entrepreneur J. Warren Bowman, Mays would not have had a rookie card, and the vintage card industry would have been deprived of one of its most prized treasures. Bowman began printing baseball cards in 1939. By 1951, his company dominated the trading card landscape. Although Topps printed a set in 1951, it did not have a license to print a card for Mays until 1952. Thus, Bowman produced the only card from Mays’ rookie season. It's one collectors have been seeking ever since.
