Just as basketball fans didn’t need a box score or advanced metrics to understand Michael Jordan’s influence on the court, this outstanding offering of one of the most revered sports printings of all time easily passes the eye test. But a PSA 10 grade only reinforce the fact that this is an absolutely stunning example of the best basketball card ever produced. Only 332 (1.1%) of the more than 29,600 copies of the 1986 Fleer #57 Michael Jordan rookie that the company has assessed have earned a PSA 10 grade. Many 1986-87 Fleer cards are besieged by centering problems, and chipping of that now-famous red, white, and blue border is common. Such issues are nowhere to be found on this stunning specimen, helping it soar above its contemporaries much like Jordan himself on the now-famous imagery selected for the marquee RC. There are a few cards that have become so legendary in the marketplace that collectors only need to refer to them by their name: the Honus Wagner, Mantle, and, of course, this Jordan. And it is only fitting that the most famous card in basketball history appeared in arguably the most important set in basketball history. In 1986, Fleer inked a licensing deal with the NBA to print 132 cards and 11 stickers featuring the game’s best players. After several years without a mainstream hoops product, the set featured rookie issues of a range of future Hall of Famers. As he did on the court, Jordan stands above them all in the eyes of collectors, with his 1986-87 Fleer RC ascending to the highest heights of sports card collecting in the years since.
