Unlike any other card from the era, the 1938 Goudey Heads-Up Baseball set sought to capitalize on the success of Disney and Fleischer Studios’ popular Mickey Mouse, Popeye, Felix the Cat, and Betty Boop cartoons, not to mention Disney's Snow White and Seven Dwarfs film that premiered in 1937. This card resembles a blend of the dwarfs and Popeye. While scant documentation exists on Goudey’s motive for the style, manufacturers frequently modeled their cards after the times and likely sought to engage children in collecting. Collectors commonly refer to this set as “Heads-Up” cards because of the oversized heads. Scarce, highly collectible, and appreciated for their unique approach, the DiMaggio ranks among the most popular from the set.
