DESCRIPTION

NBA fans embraced LeBron James from the moment he stepped onto the court. But when it came to earning the respect of his teammates during his rookie year, the 18-year-old phenom did not have the same luck. Despite winning only 17 games during the 2002-03 season, the Cavaliers’ veteran players were not keen on acknowledging LeBron as the franchise’s savior—after all, how could he possibly live up to the hype? Big man Carlos Boozer publicly claimed that the Cavs already had better players than LeBron at his position, and forward Darius Miles even remarked that bringing in a kid out of high school would not turn things around. But only a handful of games into the ‘03-’04 season, LeBron not only established himself as the best player on his team, but already one of the best in the NBA. Still, his teammates refused to give him his flowers. “Their egos wouldn’t allow it,” former Cavs head coach Paul Silas revealed. “I kept telling them, ‘You have a chance to help one of the game’s future stars,’ but they wouldn’t embrace him. If it bothered LeBron, he never let on. We won 35 games that year because of him. He’s had some outstanding seasons since then, but that first one may have been the most impressive because of how he excelled in spite of the jealousy on his own team.” Long gone are the days of this kind of ego, as players practically flock from team to team to play alongside the man known simply as “The King.” Collectors, meanwhile, continue to flock to LeBron’s rarest rookies, and this 2003 Bowman Chrome Gold Refractor certainly fits the bill. The set’s rarest parallel in stunning BGS 9.5 grade with only three graded higher by the service, this limited issue /50 could be the king of any collection. While this Gold Refractor is sure to spur jealousy among collectors, this auction’s winner will undoubtedly excel in spite of it. The certification number on this card has been checked against the third-party grader's online database and is active as of 06/09/2025.
