DESCRIPTION

It is hard to imagine that a set could improve on the 1952 Topps set, but collectors could make a salient argument that Topps topped itself in ‘53. Berger and Gelman teamed up again and outdid themselves. Topps hired renowned artist Gerry Dvorak, who had animated Popeye in 1951, to create oil paintings of each player for the 1953 set. Dvorak had risen to fame for designing the 1952 Bowman set, including the iconic Mickey Mantle. By 1953, Robinson had established himself as a four-time MLB All-Star. In the 1952 season, which this card documents, the Dodgers defeated their rival New York Giants to win the pennant but lost a heartbreaking seven-game series to the New York Yankees at home. Although Robinson led the league in on-base percentage in ‘52 and posted another banner year, he took no solace in individual accomplishments. Dodgers' fans endured another year without a title. The front of the card includes an iconic shot of a smiling Robinson with a unique Dodgers banner overlaid onto a base. The color scheme, blue Brooklyn cap, and likely replica of a slice of the Brooklyn Bridge in the background make this card one of the most identifiable in the industry. The flip side praises Robinson’s accomplishments. It should not go unnoticed that Topps awarded Robinson the first card in the set. By 1953, Robinson had established himself as a premier player, especially after winning the MVP award in 1949. While these cards are notoriously hard to find centered and they are regularly available at auction, they remain popular and valuable given their brand, design, and vintage status. The certification number on this card has been checked against the third-party grader's online database and is active as of 06/04/2026.
