In 2013, Panini Creative Director Brandon Lesley contacted Hungarian illustrator Gyula Nemeth to draw the NBA players selected for a 20-card insert for Panini’s Innovation basketball set. Nemeth responded by creating one of the most unforgettable card series in industry history, the stunning pop art collection known as Kaboom! cards. Nemeth portrayed the players as comic book characters, with the reverse side of this card so nice that it could pass as the front.
A combination of scarcity, unique typography, original illustrations, and high-flying dunking poses featured on each card in the series made it an instant classic. Kaboom! cards remain beloved—and extremely rare—to this day. In short, this is one of the most iconic LeBron James cards ever produced.
