Including Michael Jordan as part of the 1997-98 Finest Silver “Creators” subset was likely a no-brainer for Topps. Jordan has four base cards in the three-tiered set, and his “Creators” card celebrates his versatility on offense—a trait that drove opposing coaches into a tizzy. “A typical evening with Mike: a few classic jumpers, a couple of turnarounds, several hard drives to the hole, a half-dozen free throws,” Topps wrote on the flip side, “and—for old time’s sake—an acrobatic, Air Jordan jam.” Because of Jordan’s standing as the most popular in the NBA at the time, many collectors found excitement when his card appeared from a pack, and that was especially the case if their pack included Jordan’s 1997-98 Finest Silver Refractor, which is numbered 0002/1090.
1997-98 Topps Finest Basketball took a tiered approach to its base set with common (Bronze), uncommon (Silver) and rare (Gold) cards. This Jordan belongs in the Silver level. One of three parallels, uncommon Refractors were 1:48 packs. With 66 different Silver cards, the odds of finding any particular uncommon Refractor such as this MJ is 1:3,168 packs.
