Emulating the Exquisite Collection basketball brand that debuted in 2003, Upper Deck The Cup brought hockey collectors the highest-end product they had ever seen in 2005. Outside of a general concept, UD brought plenty of other attributes from the hardwood to the hockey arena. Just as it leaned on Michael Jordan to help launch its ‘03 hoops product, Upper Deck included rare patches and autos of Wayne Gretzky to help ignite interest in the Cup. The company also brought its Limited Logos insert to hockey collectors. Fans had to wait until the second edition of The Cup to find the Great One on the Limited Logos checklist, but since then, the greatest to ever take the ice has been part of various iterations of the now-iconic insert.
The 2021 The Cup Limited Logos Jumbo checklist featured a mix of signed and unsigned cards of varying print runs. Gretzky is one of just a handful of players whose card is signed, and the /10 print run his card shares with a few others is the lowest in the insert set. With a gorgeous oversized, game-used piece of Rangers jersey and an on-card auto, this card honors the final stages of Gretzky’s incredible career.
