When Fleer planned the second series of its 1996-97 flagship set, inserts were the name of the game. Advertising for the product read: “Just wait ’till you get a look at the inserts” and added that the set “features chase cards so eye-popping that we can only show you one” in the actual advertisement. In Series 1, the rarest insert offered odds of 1:72 packs, which matched the scarcest pack odds the company had ever issued for a non-autographed insert set in its flagship product. In Series 2, Fleer upped the ante with the release of Rookie Sensations (1:90 packs) and the elusive and hobby-exclusive Thrill Seekers (1:240 packs). Led by Michael Jordan, the Thrill Seekers set offered collectors a lenticular printing technology, making the 15 cards on the checklist more eye-popping than any other insert from Series 2. Still a fan favorite nearly three decades later, the original Thrill Seekers inserts epitomize one of Fleer’s internal slogans from the late 1990s—“different by design.” The flip side praises Jordan as one of the most exciting players in the league, citing his high-flying abilities as a continuation of Julius Erving’s legacy—something that Jordan accepted but never let define him. “I knew everybody’s eyes would be on me,” Jordan said as a rookie. “I’d been compared to Julius Erving and Jerry West and people want to see for themselves ... but I have to draw a line between the expectations of me and what I expect for myself. I’m trying to play my natural game, and I think I’m establishing myself, gaining the respect of the players.” The back of Jordan’s Thrill Seekers card also features a splash of bright colors reminiscent of the 1980s and ’90s against a black background, and that combination creates fragile and easily chipped edges, making PSA 10 examples difficult to obtain (only 18 examples have earned the coveted designation). Only two PSA 10 examples of this card have sold publicly since April 2022 before this month's Premier Auction. The certification number on this card has been checked against the third-party grader's online database and is active as of 04/08/2025.
