A TCG cannot become iconic without a groundbreaking first release. For Magic: The Gathering, it was Limited Edition Alpha. For Pokémon, it was Expansion Pack in Japan and Base Set 1st Edition in the US. But on March 8, 2002, duelists across North America and Europe forged their first decks and experienced Maximillion Pegasus’ Duel Monsters for the first time. Built from reprint sets of the first OCG expansions and headlined by Seto Kaiba’s signature monster, Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon introduced 126 of the most recognizable and beloved cards in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG. Dark Magician, Flame Swordsman, Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and the legendary Exodia debuted in this set, granting duelists power not seen since the days of ancient Egypt. Although Konami reprinted cards from this set dozens of times in later releases, 1st Edition LOB issues hold considerable value. Upper Deck, which originally distributed the cards outside of Asia until Konami took over in 2009, limited this set’s production early on before the game’s popularity took off; instead of reissuing the 1st Edition print, they produced the widely circulated Unlimited Edition. However, similar to MTG’s Alpha and Beta print runs and the various printings of Pokémon Base Set, variations exist between 1st Edition LOB prints. “Wavy”prints, which are widely regarded as the first 1st Edition prints of LOB, feature darker text and a distinct wrinkly or “wavy” texture on the card stock. LOB’s second 1st Edition print run featured lighter text and glossy surfaces. Beyond the cards themselves, 1st Edition “wavy” booster boxes are easily identified by the position of the “1st Edition” text on the cover. While “glossy” 1st Edition boosters feature large text centered on the right side of the box, “wavy” boosters display smaller text shifted closer to the box’s right edge. With 24 9-card booster packs inside, this “wavy” booster box offers collectors countless chances at untouched examples of the first Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon cards produced. Bidders might need to call upon more than just the “Heart of the Cards” to win the duel for this incredible offering.
