The 1954 Topps set is known for its bright colors and attractive dual-player images on the front of the cards. This beautiful PSA 9 example of Jackie Robinson’s #10, with its vibrant yellow background and engaging portrait of the all-time great, showcases much of what makes this release one of the most beloved vintage baseball productions. Only 23 of the 6,785 non-Qualified examples of this card assessed by PSA have earned a PSA 9 holder, with none graded higher. That equates to a rate of just .3%, making this a rare opportunity to obtain one of Jackie’s best-looking printings. The flip side of the card praises Robinson’s accomplishments as Rookie of the Year and MVP, and touts his consistent batting average above .300, record for highest fielding percentage, and double plays turned. More noteworthy, though, the reverse offers a rare, animated image of Robinson as a Black person. Sadly, other animated cards and advertisements from the era picture Robinson as a white person, even giving him blonde hair. The card also mentions that Robinson is the “head of the National Broadcasting Co.’s Community activities, where he helps youngsters of all creeds.” In 1952, WNBC and WNBT signed Robinson to deliver on-air commentary and to supervise the development of youth programs through the Police Athletic League, Boy Scouts, YMCA, and other nonprofits benefiting children. This beautiful card encapsulates much of what makes Jackie such an icon, and serves as a tremendous testament to his career both on the baseball field and in the world of collecting.
