Secret Rare cards have a storied history within the Pokémon TCG. Despite having no precedent in the preexisting Japanese sets, Wizards of the Coast introduced Dark Raichu in 2000’s Team Rocket expansion as the first Secret Rare. Listed as No. 83 on an 82-card set list, Dark Raichu added a new chase element to a TCG already beloved for its collectability. The next run of Secret Rares appeared throughout the Neo Series, with Shining Pokémon taking up the mantle. Neo Destiny introduced the first Secret Rare Charizard, with Shining Charizard listed as No. 107 in the 105-card set. Over the next decade, Wizards and Nintendo released three more Secret Rare Charizards: Crystal Charizard in Skyridge, a fire-breathing holofoil in EX Dragon, and a reworked iteration of Mitsuhiro Arita’s iconic Base Set artwork in Stormfront. But although Charizard boasted the most Secret Rare appearances of any Pokémon by the time 2013’s Plasma Storm entered production, Nintendo decided to give the beloved fire lizard another turn beyond the standard set list. Featuring Charizard’s iconic shiny coloration, this 2012 Black & White—Plasma Storm Secret Rare stuns with its brilliant gold border and incredible artwork. Of the more than 1,600 examples of this card reviewed by PSA, less than 5% graded Gem Mint, making this PSA 10 a true treasure. Collectors will undoubtedly chase this Secret Rare Charizard during this month’s TCG Premier Auction.
