Even as an 18-year-old first-round draft pick in 1996, Kobe Bryant would have started for many teams at the time, but because the Lakers already had a playoff-caliber roster, he became a vital sixth man and the “heir apparent” to superstardom instead. During his rookie season, Topps changed the format of its Finest series, putting cards into either a common (Bronze), uncommon (Silver), or rare (Gold) tier, and placing cards in each series in one of four subsets. Bryant was a natural fit for the “Heirs” subset in the Series 2 checklist, and his 1996-97 Topps Finest Gold Refractor has become one of his top rookie offerings.
Collectors found Gold Refractors—which utilized the hyper-plaid Refractor technology more associated with Atomic Refractors of the era—only once every 288 packs (once every 12 boxes).
Just five copies in the BGS census have a higher grade than this Gem Mint 9.5. Subgrades include 10 for Edges, and 9.5 for Corners and Surface.
