After debuting to incredible fanfare in football and basketball releases, the now-iconic Precious Metal Gems parallel made its way to the diamond in the 1998 Metal Universe release. And while basketball and football collectors had a shot at triple-digit print runs in the years prior, baseball fans were treated to a tougher chase, with each PMG carrying a print run of just /50.
This offering combines perhaps the era’s most popular parallel with the era’s most popular baseball player. Ken Griffey Jr.’s best cards remain eagerly targeted by collectors, with interest in marquee examples such as this 1998 Metal Universe PMG stamped 11/50 soaring like one of his towering home runs.
This pop 8 NM-MT PSA 8 is one of the few examples to survive nearly 30 years relatively unscathed despite the presence of that full-foil front that makes finding copies in high grade tougher than sneaking a fastball past the Kid. Just two copies in the PSA registry have a higher grade.
