The final 75 cards of the 2000 Donruss Elite football release were reserved for rookies. Unlike the other 125 cards in the set, the base versions of the newcomers’ issues featured an /2000 print run. Little did Donruss know the degree to which the University of Michigan quarterback portrayed on card #183 would live up to the product’s name.
While Brady’s base serial-numbered RC is intriguing enough, Donruss produced three different versions of the card that would amp up the scarcity. The set borrowed themes from some of the sports card offerings that preceded it. The first 500 cards of a rookie’s 2000 Donruss Elite production were die-cut.
Similar to the Essential Credientials Now and Future parallels of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, 2000 Donruss Elite's Status and Aspirations parallels had varying print runs depending on the card. Print runs for Status cards matched the player's jersey number. Aspirations had a print run of 100 minus the player’s jersey number. While Brady would go on to famously wear 12 with the Patriots, his No. 10 Michigan jersey was the basis for his Status print run, making this one of his rarest rookies.
