One of the most beloved Pokèmon promos ever printed, the Tamamushi University Prize Magikarp was the culmination of a months-long promotional campaign from famed Japanese magazine publisher Shogakukan. Starting in March 1998 and continuing for much of the year, Shogakukan encouraged readers in grades 1-6 to complete exams and other assignments and mail them in. Participating “students” received grades in return. The Hyper Professor exam was the final – and most difficult – of these exams. Those who earned a passing grade received a gift pack that included a Tamamushi University Magikarp promo card. Shogakukan reported more than 21,000 students attempted the Hyper Professor exam, though no more than 1,000 passed and received one of these promos.
Since the prizes were mailed to grade schoolers, many incurred damage while in transit or the hands of young winners. That means plenty of collectors are sure to be studying up on this Pokèmon classic in an effort to make their way to the head of the bidding class.
