In December 2021, Creatures Inc. celebrated Pokémon’s 25th anniversary with a unique gift: the Corporate History Deck. Embossed with a gold foil Pokémon 25th anniversary logo, this 30-card set was distributed to Pokémon TCG illustrators, Creatures staff members, and other Pokémon affiliates, with each card representing a different year in the TCG’s history. Despite the card game debuting in Japan in 1996, the Corporate History Deck included a prototype Chansey card commemorating 1995, the year Creatures began developing the Pokémon TCG. This “test” or “beta” card was illustrated and templated by Kouichi Ooyama, one of the TCG’s original designers, and includes many elements that became a standard of Pokémon cards, including the locations of the HP stat and attack text and the style of the Pokémon portrait. Although the final artwork for Chansey released in the Base Set was created by famed illustrator Ken Sugimori, the rough sketch on this prototype closely resembles the finished product, right down to the Pokémon’s hand placement. Instead of traditional card backs, these cards featured trivia and fun facts about the company’s history, with Chansey’s detailing the origins of Creatures Inc. While it is difficult to determine the number of Corporate History Decks issued, conservative estimates place the print run at 250-400 copies per card, with even fewer being offered for sale. PSA has graded only 27 examples of this card.
