Magic: The Gathering creator Richard Garfield had a unique idea regarding the most powerful card in the earliest printings of his trading card game. Garfield commissioned illustrator Christopher Rush to produce the Black Lotus, a simple—yet incredibly powerful—flower, a contrasting view on the traditional fantasy archetypes such as rings or other physical equipment. The Black Lotus has since become arguably the most iconic TCG card ever printed and maintains incredible demand from collectors. Released in August 1993, the Alpha printing is the first production run of MTG cards. According to the original Wizards of the Coast CEO Peter Adkinson, the Alpha print run had a 295-card checklist and a total production of 2.61 million cards (including approximately 1,008 of each rare card, such as the Black Lotus). Compounding the relative rarity that comes with a shorter print run is the fact players eagerly stacked their decks with these powerful cards whenever possible. That meant heavy in-game use that resulted in many copies incurring physical damage. A true grail, this is your chance to add a BGS 9 example of one of the most famous cards, TCG or otherwise, ever printed. All five Moxen and a hallowed Black Lotus are on the auction block in this month's Premier Auction, giving TCG collectors a chance to add six of the most important MTG cards ever printed to their collecting deck.
