According to the original Wizards of the Coast CEO, Peter Adkinson, the 1993 Beta printing of Magic: The Gathering allowed players another shot at obtaining the 295 unique collectible cards from the Alpha set—plus seven new cards. Passionate players and collectors quickly opened most of the supply as the trading card game released to booming popularity. As the first collectible card game, MTG allowed players to strategize and create new and inventive decks with their favorite monster and artifact cards. In addition, the wide variety of cards and effects ensured that no two games played out the same way, giving MTG immense replayability as players continuously adjusted their decks to include new combinations of cards. This month’s Pop Culture Premier Auction features an opportunity to own one of the few remaining factory-sealed, 60-card Beta starter decks left in existence. Each deck includes two rare cards, meaning if the winning bidder has enough moxie to open it, they will have two opportunities to pull Beta versions of famed cards such as Black Lotus, Mox Sapphire, Timetwister, or one of the dual lands. With an incredible opportunity to own a piece of MTG history upon them, this Beta starter deck will likely see many collectors ravenously clicking the bid icon.
