Released in August 1993, the Alpha printing was the first production run of MTG cards. According to original Wizards of the Coast CEO Peter Adkinson, the Alpha set had a 295-card checklist and a total production of 2.61 million cards (with approximately 1,008 of each rare card, including the Black Lotus). As the most power-packed offering in the coveted “Power Nine,” the unrivaled Black Lotus serves as a free-to-play Mono Artifact, which adds three mana of any single color to a player’s mana pool, giving those who utilize it a sizable competitive advantage. Because of its power, Wizards of the Coast added the Black Lotus to its MTG reserved list, meaning the company has promised not to reprint the card in a legal competition format. Luckily there remains nothing against the rules about adding this famous TCG printing to your collection. Only one BGS-graded example has earned a higher mark than this BGS 9.5.
