A proud country, Italy treasures its culture, arts, and sports. Home of some of the world’s most prominent attractions, it features the Vatican, Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Grand Canal in Venice, and Pompeii, to name a few. But its biggest attraction, the Colosseum, served as the world’s first and largest sports venue. And no sport prevails more in Italy than football. And given their rich history, it should come as no surprise that they celebrate the best Italian footballer ever with such enthusiasm.
Giuseppe Meazza remains a larger-than-life figure in Italy. While Babe Ruth dazzled crowds in America, Meazza achieved the same stature in Europe as he led his team to World Cup victories in 1934 and 1938. Nicknamed “il genio” (the genius) for his field IQ, he had come a long way from growing up poor kicking rolled-up rags on the streets of Milan.
The Lurati Chocolate Company printed a set in 1927 that featured Italian legends in film and sports. The Meazza ranks as the most popular from the set. It shows the 17-year-old budding star long before he had inspired a nation to cheer. If you want to find another, you might need the NASA Hubbell Space Telescope. PSA has only graded one example of this card. A true 1/1 in a PSA slab, this vintage treasure should test PWCC’s servers in extended bidding. Prepare for a battle fit for the Colosseum. In bocca al lupo.
