After opening the season with a disappointing 6-7-1 stretch, Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers have reminded the league why they entered the season as one of the favorites for the Stanley Cup. The Oilers are on a prolonged heater heading into the start of the January Premier Auction, putting together an 19-5-2 record since that dismal start to the 2024-25 campaign. McDavid, of course, is a major reason why. The three-time Hart Trophy winner remains one of the most impactful forces on the ice and in card collecting. Much of that impact comes from his 2015 Upper Deck The Cup true RPA, arguably the most famous hockey card of the last decade.
This BGS 9 example represents much of what makes this card so special. Stamped 67/99, it displays a breathtaking three-color, three-break patch and a 10-grade autograph. Collectors knew what to expect from The Cup by McDavid’s 2015 debut. And Upper Deck did not disappoint in the product’s 11th year, creating more than 50 versions of McDavid cards throughout The Cup (excluding printing plates). But even with so many choices, few of those offerings delight collectors more than his flagship RPA.
