First released in Japan in 2004, Gold Star cards immediately won over the collecting community as they were unlike anything they had seen before. Legendary illustrator Masakazu Fukuda pushed the limits of what was possible on a Pokémon card. For the first time ever, we saw 3-D style artwork that reached off of the cards. This was also the first time we ever artwork that extended outside of the character window. These were some of the toughest cards to pull.
Combine these factors and it's easy to understand why Gold Stars have been some of the most sought after Pokémon cards for over 20 years. With the Torchic card, we see a phenomenon that we rarely see in Pokemon cards. Typically 1st Edition cards are more valuable than their Unlimited counterpart. But this Torchic is an exception to that rule. The Unlimited Gold Star Torchic is much more sought after than the 1st Edition Gold Star version because it is more rare. Therefore collectors place a premium on it.
