Leaf manufactured its landmark 1948 baseball set after the season ended, as evidenced by the back of the card, which commends Jackie Robinson for breaking the color line in baseball and winning the Rookie of the Year award in 1947 and also includes his final stats for the ‘48 season. Leaf might have printed them late since so much of the country’s industry was preoccupied with supporting the military’s effort in World War II during this decade. Regardless of the reasoning behind its later release, the 1948 Leaf set, the first baseball set printed in color after WWII, ranks as one of the most respected in the industry. And this Robinson RC stands as one of the most famous baseball printings of all time.
