First printed as some of the headliners in the 1993 releases of Magic: The Gathering from Wizards of the Coast, the Mox gem cards have established themselves as part of the revered “Power Nine.” The Mox Sapphire represents the gem that provides a blue mana source at zero cost to its user. Unlike land cards, which have a once-per-turn play limit, Moxen could be played as many times as players had the cards in their hand in a single turn, creating an ever-increasing power gap over opponents who did not utilize them.
During the earliest years of MTG play, many players leaned on the strength of these gems by including them in playing decks. Due to the lack of card protection during those years, many examples absorbed damage from love, chip-dusted fingers, and excessive game play and shuffling. Finding high-grade examples of any MTG card from the earliest sets remains a challenge for collectors – even more so for Power Nine cards such as this one.
