Wizards of the Coast commissioned the original Magic: The Gathering (MTG) cards with bright colors and simple illustrations immediately recognizable by people viewing them from several feet away. Mark Poole took these parameters to heart, creating many of his most outstanding works, like Ancestral Recall, to have a certain charm absent in modern-day MTG. Inspired by Aztec culture, Ancestral Recall is a unique piece from the Alpha printing of the franchise. At first glance, it may not seem to fit the prevalent card themes of powerful creatures, mystical spells, or demonic imagery, yet the card has enough thought-provoking mysteries to make it fit right at home. Part of the allure that made early Magic so enticing were the stories that the artwork weaved with a single frame to convey them. Who are the guards atop the steps to the temple in the background? What secret does the temple hold? Who is the bearded man, the piece's focal point, and what mysterious power does he hold? What meaning does the card's name, Ancestral Recall, hold? Manufactured in August of 1993, the Alpha printing stands as the first print run of the original MTG designed by Richard Garfield and released by Wizards of the Coast. According to the original Wizards of the Coast CEO, Peter Adkinson, the Alpha print run consisted of 295 unique collectible playing cards, including 116 different rare cards. The company limited the print run to 2.61 million cards, with only approximately 1,008 of each rare card, such as Ancestral Recall, released. Dubbed by early Magic players as one of the ""Power Nine,"" Ancestral Recall was anointed as one of the nine most powerful of all the franchise's original cards. Ancestral Recall is also notably the only Power Nine card in the five ""Boons,"" cards that, when played, give players three of something at the cost of a single mana. Allowing its player to draw three cards or force their opponent to draw three extra cards for only a single blue mana, Ancestral Recall afforded superb playability when timed correctly. Adding to the collectability of this card, it is the only one of the Boons to have not received a reprint since its Unlimited issue making this the first of only three printings of the card. PSA has graded only four examples of the Alpha Ancestral Recall in PSA 10 out of 71, making this an immediate contender as a showpiece of even the most robust collections. A card that transcends the game it hails from, this PSA 10 Alpha Ancestral Recall can be yours with patience and prayer.
