Gold Star cards first appeared in EX Team Rocket Returns as a special chase card for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Found approximately once every two booster boxes, Gold Star cards showcase the artwork of the shiny variants of Pokémon—a special circumstance introduced in the Pokémon Gold & Silver games. Shiny Pokémon feature distinct color variations and dazzling entrance animations that cascade stars all over the screen. Gamers only had a 1:4,096 chance of encountering a Shiny Pokémon, and the Gold Star cards perfectly re-create the feelings of exclusivity and euphoria that washed over collectors who obtained one of the rare characters. Those same feelings have made the Gold Star cards some of the most desirable Pokémon cards ever created. Rayquaza descended from the heavens to stop the devastation caused by the conflict between Groudon and Kyogre, and legend stated that Rayquaza’s ferocity could force the Primal beings into a slumber for a thousand years to bring peace to the Hoenn region. The EX Deoxys Rayquaza Gold Star by Masakazu Fukuda captures this ferocity, and Pokémon collectors widely consider it one of the most breathtaking and awe-inspiring Pokémon cards.
