Topps hit the jackpot with its 1963 “Rookie Stars” quad rookies cards by spotlighting three Hall of Famers and Pete Rose all included on the flagship checklist. Pirates icon Willie Stargell is one of the biggest, sharing his rookie with Brock Davis, Jim Gosger and John Herrnstein. Stargell was the clear star of the card, scoring more runs (1,194) than the combined number of MLB games the other three played (1,186).
Stargell helped bring a pair of World Series Championships to Pittsburgh. He was also the 1979 National League MVP, a seven-time All-Star and two-time NL home run leader. Bigger than numbers, he was beloved on the Pirates.
One of the high numbers in 1963 Topps Baseball, PSA has assessed the Stargell and company ""Rookie Stars"" card nearly 3,500 times. Of those, just 34 have a received a Mint 9 assessment without any qualifiers and only two rank higher.
The certification number on this card has been checked against the third-party grader's online database and is active as of 03/02/2026.
