Shohei Ohtani’s baseball cards have carried high demand since he came to the Angels as a legitimate two-way superstar, awing fans with prodigious power at the plate and incredible movement and velocity on his pitches from the mound. Less than three months after Ohtani signed with the Angels on December 9, 2017, Topps put him on the 2018 Topps Heritage checklist. Released to collectors on February 28, he had both a base variation and a prestigious Red One Autograph, which has since become one of his most iconic rookie signatures. The first Ohtani autographed cards available in packs hail from the annual Real One Autographs set, which depicts Ohtani on the mound in his Angels jersey (Ohtani later had a similar autograph card depicting him as a batter in the Heritage High Number release). In 2018, Topps recycled the design from its classic 1969 set—best known for Reggie Jackson’s rookie card and Mickey Mantle’s final card. The company also used the design for the hard-signed Real One autographs—a staple of Topps Heritage since its debut in 2001—and 1:1,003 Hobby packs, collectors found an elusive, hand-numbered /69 Red Ink variation, such as this example of Ohtani’s first rookie auto. Demand for Ohtani's cards has only increased since then following four MVP awards, two World Series titles, and his founding of the 50/50 Club. The certification number on this card has been checked against the third-party grader's online database and is active as of 06/02/2026.
