Less than three months after Shohei Ohtani signed with the Los Angeles Angels, Topps put him on the checklist as a late addition to the 2018 Topps Heritage base and autograph sets, with the product released to collectors on February 28. The first Ohtani autographed cards available in packs hail from the annual Real One Autographs set, which depicts Ohtani on the mound in his Angels jersey. But what about his other skill set? No problem, Topps said. When the company released its Topps Heritage High Number Series in September, Ohtani had another Real Ones Autograph—this one depicting him as a batter. In 2018, Topps recycled the design from its classic 1969 set—best known for Reggie Jackson’s rookie card and Mickey Mantle’s final card. The company also used the design for the hard-signed Real One autographs—a staple of Topps Heritage since its debut in 2001.
This is one of only five examples of this card to earn a PSA 10 label.
