In 2003, Upper Deck stunned basketball card collectors with the release of Exquisite Collection. “(The price of) Exquisite was met with a lot of resistance,” said Karvin Cheung, who conceptualized the brand. “I even had feedback meetings with a lot of stores. A lot of local card shops were like, ‘You are absolutely insane and crazy. You’re going to kill the Upper Deck brand.’ Everyone just trashed it. ... But another person asked me, ‘Were you confident it would work?’ Absolutely.” At $500 per one-pack box, the landmark product set new standards for what high-end cards should look like, so Cheung ensured it delivered the best players and concepts on the checklist to maximize the value to collectors.
