Not only does the 1998-99 Fleer Ultra Platinum Medallion Kobe Bryant rank as one of his rarer parallels, but it's also one of the most beautiful. Today, Ultra's photography choices are often overlooked. But when the brand hit its stride in the mid to late '90s, the images were part of the premium presentation. So were its parallels. In 1998-99 Ultra, all 125 base cards came with three additional versions: Gold Medallion, which were one per pack, 1/1 Masterpieces, and Platinum Medallion, which sat between the two in regard to rarity.
Exclusive to hobby packs, Platinum Medallion veterans, like this Bryant, are /99. Twenty-five rookies are /66. These cards removed the color from the background, making it match the parallel. The results for Bryant are striking. The photo is one of his best, flying full-color through the air, ready to throw down a reverse dunk and thrill the Great Western Forum crowd.
Just one copy in the BGS registry ranks higher than this Mint 9.
