Before LeBron James arrived in Cleveland, the Cavaliers and the Detroit Pistons did not have an intense rivalry, but Topps seemed to look into its crystal ball to bring attention to the future when producing LeBron’s 2003-04 Topps Chrome rookie card. LeBron took some of his first shots in the budding rivalry during a preseason game on October 7, 2003. Allen Einstein, Detroit’s team photographer, captured an image of LeBron taking a jump shot over Ben Wallace during that match-up, and Topps used it for LeBron’s revered Chrome rookie card. This example of his 2003-04 Topps Chrome Refractor gives collectors a perfect reminder of the rivalry that helped LeBron establish himself as one of the NBA’s best players. His Topps Chrome rookie recognizes his brilliant high school career and standing as the No. 1 pick in the 2003 draft, and it remains the most coveted card from a star-studded rookie checklist. In the Chrome set, Topps gave the rookies more appeal by updating the photos, giving most of them NBA action shots as opposed to the draft night or college photos found on most rookie cards in the flagship Topps set. Collectors found one of the 67 rookie Refractors every 12 packs, and the lustrous rainbow finish gives LeBron’s rookie card an extra flourish fit for the NBA’s all-time scoring leader. This copy has been graded a Gem Mint BGS 9.5 and includes 9.5 subgrades Corners, Edges and Surface. Of the nearly 1,300 times that BGS has reviewed LeBron's rookie Refractor, just 37 have a higher grade.
