As the 15th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, Giannis Antetokounmpo gives a look on his 2013 Panini Prizm rookie card that suggests he planned to take over the NBA—a fitting photo for his Prizm card, considering how prominent the brand has become in the industry. After the NBA granted Panini exclusive licensing rights to produce NBA cards in 2009, one popular aspect of the market disappeared—chromium cards. Between brands like Topps Chrome, Bowman Chrome, and Finest, basketball card collectors had at least one chromium choice every year from 1993 to 2008. Panini brought chromium style back into the industry four years into its journey as a mainstream basketball card producer by introducing Panini Prizm in 2012. The follow-up to that breakthrough set offered up even more parallel possibilities—and brought collectors Giannis’ iconic Prizm rookie card, including this stunning BGS 10 example of the coveted 2013 Panini Prizm /60 Orange Prizm rookie card. Only four parallels from Giannis’ full rainbow of 2013 Prizms have more scarcity than this sparkling jumbo hobby-exclusive Orange Prizm, as Panini upped the number of rainbow-reflective Prizm parallels from three to 11 for the second-year set. Each jumbo hobby box included an average of 20 Prizm parallels, several of which hailed from three jumbo-exclusive sets. Collectors found an Orange Prizm, on average, once every five packs (or two per box). While Antetokounmpo quickly took over the top spot as the rookie to have among the 36 on the checklist, the Bucks struggled during his rookie season, finishing an NBA-worst 15-67. The “Greek Freak” himself showed some promise, breaking into the starting lineup for part of the campaign, and as Giannis continued developing, the Bucks shot up the standings. They improved to .500 and made the playoffs the following season, and they have only missed the postseason once since—winning a championship along the way in 2021. In the lead-up to that title, Giannis became the 11th player in NBA history to win back-to-back MVP awards in 2019 and ’20, and he has earned unanimous first-team All-NBA status in five straight seasons. Still only 28 years old, Giannis will likely add plenty more sparkle to his résumé in the years to come. The certification number on this card has been checked against the third-party grader's online database and is active as of 11/03/2023.
