Trading card companies did not make producing Tom Brady rookie cards their highest priority thanks to his late draft status. But after becoming arguably the greatest player in the sport's history, the Brady rookie cards that do exist have become popular among collectors. Brady has 44 mainstream rookie cards, a figure that represents about two-thirds of the 68 brands released in 2000 (both totals include retail variations). Few of Brady’s rookies embody his first-year journey better than his 2000 SP Authentic card. Throughout training camp in 2000, the Patriots kept four quarterbacks on the roster, so Brady treated every week like it could have been his last—as suggested by his focused look down the practice field on this card.
Upper Deck introduced the SP product in 1993 as “super-premium” brands rushed into the football card industry, and it quickly became a popular destination among rookie card enthusiasts. Originally known for its foil-splashed “Premier Prospects” rookie cards, SP’s approach to rookies changed in 1997 when Upper Deck adopted the SP Authentic branding as the product became home to numerous autograph sets. That year, the “Future Watch” rookie cards debuted, and by 2000, production numbers had dropped to /1250 for the 60 rookies in the set. Now the headliner from the checklist, Brady’s card experienced a significant rise in interest throughout his career – interest that remains today.
