In the context of the printing world, a “make ready” is an extra sheet of material used to ensure the printing press or print device is properly calibrated for production. This practice is also employed by trading card manufacturers and was especially common in the days before modern technology drastically improved the card-printing process. Wizards of the Coast relied on “make readies” to determine whether their printing plates were aligned, though press workers did not always have blank material at their disposal. During the production of the 1999 English Fossil expansion, a worker needing a “make ready” decided to grab an uncut sheet of the Jungle theme deck “Water Blast” and printed a Fossil test on top of it. While press workers typically discarded most “make readies,” this sheet survived and eventually made its way to auction. However, instead of keeping it intact, the winning bidder approached CGC and requested to grade all 121 cards from the Water Blast/Fossil sheet individually. While this practice is uncommon, CGC agreed on the condition that the sheet be cut professionally. And so, 121 double-printed “make ready” cards were born. Graded CGC 7, this Kingler/Eevee test print is noted as “Sheet Position B11,” which confirms its place on the “make ready.” A one-of-a-kind misprint with a unique history, this card is sure to pique collectors’ interest during this month’s TCG Premier Auction.
