Outside of Upper Deck's classic Young Guns issues, few releases elicit as much anticipation from hockey collectors as the company's The Cup RPAs, which debuted with products initial 2005-06 set. And while the 2015-16 edition of this premium hockey staple centered around the chase for a certain Edmonton Oilers center, the 2016-17 rookie chase was all about Toronto's Auston Matthews.
Cards # 101-184 in The Cup's checklist were reserved for the coveted RPAs. The 84 issues were split into two levels, with Level 1 cards numbered /249 and Level 2 cards numbered /99. Matthews was slotted in at card #180, one of a handful who got the most exclusive /99 treatment. This Mint BGS 9 copy of the Leafs star's RPA is stamped 44/99 and includes a two-color swatch of event-worn jersey and Matthews' on-card signature, complete with an inscription of his jersey number 34.
