There was so much excitement surrounding the call-up of touted Mariners shortstop prospect Alex Rodriguez in July 1994 that even the Kingdome could not hold it together. Ten days after the 18-year-old made his major-league debut, some ceiling tiles inside the 18-year-old Kingdome came crashing down, forcing the Mariners onto a month-long road trip while repairs were made. A-Rod did not make it through that entire road trip before his first stint as a major-leaguer ended with 11 hits and three steals in 17 games, but he soon became a regular staple on Seattle’s infield and one of the best all-around hitters in baseball. To celebrate his debut, Rodriguez was included in several baseball card sets in 1994, and the one that collectors flock to most is his 1994 SP foil rookie card. With dark-foiled edges across the front, the card is very difficult to find with a PSA 10 designation, but this month’s Premier Auction brings one of those seldomly seen cards into the light. Just 59 of the 17,603 examples of this card to pass through PSA’s graders have received the PSA 10 distinction, and PWCC last offered one of these cards in July 2021. The Kingdome was demolished in a controlled explosion in March 2000, and one collector will now demolish the competition and add one of the top ‘90s baseball rookie cards to their collection.
