Topps released a baseball, basketball, football, and hockey set in the same year for the first time in 1957, and with plenty of big names on all three checklists, the year holds a special place for many vintage collectors. This is especially true for football collectors, with the ‘57 Topps gridiron release holding some of the era’s most prominent rookie cards, including this Bart Starr #119.
Along with Johnny Unitas and Packers teammate Paul Hornung, Starr shines brightly in the 154-card, two-series ‘57 Topps football set. The brightly colored horizontal cards are split on both sides, featuring a close-up portrait and a posed action shot of every player on the front, while a brief biography and statistics combine with a cartoon to comprise the two halves on the back.
This Pop. 2 SGC 9 example showcases several characteristics most other copies of this seminal Starr rookie don’t. This offering features sharp edges and corners and deep, clear color that’s rare in this high-series printing and helped the card earn Fanatics Collect–A Eye Appeal designation. For additional context, no examples have been graded higher by SGC. PSA has awarded three PSA 9 grades with none graded higher, while BGS-assessed copies top out at two BGS 8.5 examples. This is the first time one of those scant few PSA 9 or SGC 9 examples of this card has come up for public auction since 2021, providing a rare opportunity to obtain a stunning Starr RC.
