Few draft classes in NBA history have carried as much allure as the 2003 contingent led by LeBron James. With other big-time prospects including Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh joining him, the three mainstream basketball card producers saw an opportunity to capitalize on the incoming popularity those rookies would bring the industry. The companies combined to re-introduce five sets they had produced in the past but did not release in 2002—including Fleer E-X, which delivered an old hit with the revitalization of the fabled Jambalaya inserts from the 1990s.
Six years before LeBron debuted on the NBA hardwood, Fleer brought collectors one of the most celebrated 1990s inserts with the 1997-98 E-X2001 Jambalaya cards, a scarce set that celebrated the best dunkers in the NBA with cut-out action photos in front of a two-toned background. In 2003, Fleer/SkyBox reimagined the insert to celebrate the top five picks in the draft, two other first-rounders, and eight of the best veteran dunkers. The basic design remained the same in 2003-04, but unlike in 1997-98—when every card had a red and green background—the new cards had a two-toned background matching the primary colors of each player’s team. The rounded die-cut cards had stated odds of 1:480 packs. James' card led off the checklist and remains the most popular in the set.
