On offer in this month’s Fanatics Fest June Premier Auction is one of the most impressive Michael Jordan insert sets to hit the auction block in years. This lot of all 10 1998-99 Upper Deck Ionix M.J. HoloGrFX cards in PSA 10 grade presents an incredible opportunity to own a stunning selection of M.J. cards. With its lustrous Refractor-like finish, sparkling lettering that resembles the popular Rave-like pattern of the era, and a red aesthetic that magnificently matches Jordan’s Bulls colors, the set looks phenomenal. But the chance to own 10 gorgeous Gem Mint M.J. inserts from the hallowed late-’90s period of hoops collecting is just the start of this lot’s amazing attributes.
Pulling one of these beauties from the 1998-99 Ionix product was a tough task in its own right, with pack odds of 1:1,500. That means pulling a specific card in the set was a 1:15,000 pack quest. Though they’re not serial numbered, many in the basketball collecting community believe Upper Deck limited the print run of this set to just /90. That double-digit production run makes this one of M.J.’s rarer inserts from the decade. That rarity increases when PSA population is taken into account. Five of these cards have a pop count of less than 10, including two (#MJ3 and #MJ7) that are one of only six PSA 10s.
Any rare Jordan insert from the ‘90s is worthy of attention. But an entire set of 10 in PSA 10 grade will feel like a Hall-of-Fame-worthy addition to any hoops collection.
